HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Provides State of the Art Surgery

Highland, IL – HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital – Highland provides the newest technology in orthopedic surgery – the MAKO Robot. The MAKO Robot is used for partial knee replacement and total hip replacement surgeries, allowing for faster recovery and longer lasting results for patients.

One of those patients is Cathy Jacober, who over the course of the last four months had partial knee replacement surgeries on both of her knees with the MAKO Robot. Jacober was one of the first MAKO patients at St. Joseph’s Hospital in September. The first surgery went so well she immediately scheduled her second one.

“I had gotten to the point where I had bone on bone for quite a while,” Jacober said. “I had received injections before but it was to the point where it was hard to walk and I was very uncomfortable. The first surgery went really well and within two days I was walking without a walker.”

Jacober worked with Dr. Felix Ungacta, orthopedic surgeon at St. Joseph’s Hospital, to determine the best treatment plan. The MAKO procedure was chosen because of its ability to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Prior to the surgery, patients have a CT scan of their joints to create a personalized 3D model of their unique anatomy. That model is loaded into the MAKO system where an individualized pre-operative plan is set. During surgery, the MAKO helps guide the surgeon within the pre-defined area mapped out from the model with established boundaries. By having this pre-determined area, the MAKO helps provide more accurate placement and alignment of the implant.

Thanks to the two partial knee replacements, Jacober has regained a lifestyle she had given up due to the pain. “Before these surgeries, I didn’t want to walk because it hurt so badly. I was to the point where I didn’t want to do things,” she said. “Since my second surgery in October I have started walking to the park and being more active. I’m able to get healthier all around because of the surgeries.”

Surgeries using the MAKO Robot offer many benefits over traditional knee or hip replacement procedures. Many patients experience:
  • Reduced pain
  • Minimal hospitalization
  • More rapid recovery
  • Less implant wear and loosening
  • Smaller scar
  • Better motion
