HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Named as Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in Country


HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital - Highland was recently named one of the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) for Practices in Quality in the country. There are 1,332 CAHs in the United States.

The Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals, including St. Joseph’s Hospital, scored best among critical access hospitals on iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength Index™ for Practices in Quality. The rankings were recently announced by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). An awards ceremony will be held during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in September in Kansas City, Mo.

The Top 20 Critical Access Hospital “winners” are those hospitals who have achieved success in the overall performance based on a composite rating from nineDescription: image desc for 24 indices of strength: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, population risk, cost, charge, quality, outcomes, patient perspectives, and financial stability. This group was selected from iVantage’s Top 100 CAH list, released earlier this year.

“This award is the product of a lot of hard work and dedication by the colleagues and physicians at St. Joseph’s Hospital,” said Peg Sebastian, former President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital. Sebastian led St. Joseph’s for six years before transitioning to the President & CEO position at sister hospital HSHS St. Elizabeth’s in January. “St. Joseph’s Hospital provides Highland area residents the best care possible, close to home. This award strengthens St. Joseph’s position as the hometown healthcare provider of choice.”

Those hospitals that have been recognized as Top 20 Critical Access Hospital “best practice recipients” have achieved success one of two key areas of performance:

Quality index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank across the five categories of Hospital Compare Process of Care measures.

Patient perspective index: A rating of hospital performance based on the percentile rank on two Hospital Compare HCAHPS measures (“Overall Rating” and “Highly Recommend).”
