Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Goal
To help lessen symptoms and complications of pulmonary disease and teach participants how to reach optimal levels of independence and physical capabilities.

Benefits

  • Controlling and alleviating, as much as possible, the symptoms and complications of pulmonary impairment

  • Conditioning participants to achieve their highest capacity to carry out everyday living activities and increase exercise tolerance
  • Improving quality of life
  • Promoting independence
  • Reducing exacerbations and hospitalization

Participants typically attend three times a week for about 6-10 weeks. Sessions last about an hour.

All program participants have their choice of a variety of equipment during exercise sessions. In addition, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital offers Healthy Pathways Exercise Program, which is available for those who complete the outpatient Cardiac or Pulmonary Program. All sessions are held in the Medical Office Building. Many types of insurance cover outpatient programs such as these.
